What is it about San Francisco that makes it just so magical?
Rayoun and Sumi were married last year in Toronto, in a traditional Tamil wedding and reception surrounded by their families. But months before any of that — before the Reception playlists were finalized or the seating charts argued over — they flew to San Francisco City Hall Engagement Session with us that would end up telling its own quieter story.
We’d spoken over several calls in the lead-up: logistics, moodboards, back-and-forth on locations that could hold two very different moods in one afternoon. What we landed on was a session in two halves — a formal beginning at San Francisco City Hall, followed by something softer and wilder at Lands End.
A San Francisco City Hall Engagement Session Built Around Architecture and Light
City Hall has a way of making anyone look like they’re mid-story — the marble staircases, the gold-leafed railings, the rotunda that seems to funnel light in from three directions at once. It felt right for the beginning of Rayoun and Sumi’s session. They came dressed formally: Sumi in a pale, embroidered lehenga with a sheer dupatta that caught the light every time she moved, Rayoun in a soft grey suit.
We moved through the building slowly, letting the architecture set the pace rather than rushing through a shot list. Some of our favorite frames from the day came from just watching them exist inside the space — leaning against a balustrade mid-embrace, catching each other’s eye halfway down the majestic staircase, the kind of moments that don’t need much direction once two people are actually comfortable together.

From Marble Staircases to Cypress Groves
The second half of the day looked nothing like the first — which was the plan. We’d flown into San Francisco a few days ahead of the shoot specifically to scout Land’s End, walking the trails in the late afternoon to see how the light actually behaved as evening came in — where it broke through the cypress trees, where the fog tended to sit over the water, which clearing would catch the last of the sun.
Sumi and Rayoun changed into something far more relaxed for this part: her in a flowing floral dress, him in a linen shirt and light trousers. We walked the same trails we’d scouted days before, and it paid off — we knew almost exactly where to be, and when.
Golden Hour at Lands End
By the time we reached the coastline, the light had turned the kind of gold that only shows up for about twenty minutes before it’s gone. The cypress trees at Land’s End are wind-bent and ancient-looking, grown at odd angles from decades of coastal wind, and in that late light they threw long shadows across the trail. Above the water, a low haze sat over the horizon, softening the mountains across the bay until they looked almost drawn rather than photographed.
There’s something ephemeral about the light at Lands End in the evening — ethereal, almost, in the way it refuses to sit still. It moves through the trees in shifting beams, catches the mist rising off the ocean, and for a short window turns everything it touches slightly golden. Sumi and Rayoun, standing at the cliff’s edge and looking out at the water, needed almost no direction from us in this light — it was doing most of the emotional work on its own.

What made this session work wasn’t just two beautiful locations — it was the contrast between them. City Hall gave Rayoun and Sumi a formal, architectural backdrop that matched the weight and tradition of the wedding still ahead of them. Land’s End gave them room to be quieter and looser, just two people who happened to also be getting married in a few months.
