California Desert Elopement at the Glamis Sand Dunes in Indian Attire
The California desert holds a magic unlike anywhere else: vast golden landscapes, soft light that dances across the dunes, and a sense of stillness that makes every moment feel timeless. For couples seeking something deeply personal, adventurous, and cinematic, a California desert elopement, or an engagement shoot, offers the perfect blend of beauty and intimacy.

Amy & Kevin’s Story
Amy and Kevin were married during COVID, and while we had originally planned to photograph their wedding, lockdown restrictions prevented them from having their big, fat Indian wedding. To celebrate their love and recreate the magic of their wedding, we organized a special two-day desert shoot, complete with their Indian wedding and reception outfits. It was in these sands that they chose to say private vows to each other.
Over the course of two days, we photographed Amy and Kevin across sunrises and sunsets, allowing us to capture a variety of moods and lighting. On the first day, Amy wore her traditional maroon wedding lehenga, while Kevin donned his ivory sherwani, reflecting their wedding ceremony look. On the second day, they changed into their reception outfits, creating a full narrative of their wedding celebration in one beautifully styled desert session.

A Stunning Desert Engagement in Indian Attire
The shoot took place at the Imperial Sand Dunes, also known as the Glamis Dunes, near Yuma. Stretching endlessly under open skies, the dunes create a surreal, dreamlike setting — a natural masterpiece sculpted by light and wind. The vibrant colors of Amy and Kevin’s outfits contrasted beautifully with the neutral tones of the desert, creating images that are both bold and timeless.
The desert backdrop elevated every detail — from intricate embroidery on Amy’s lehenga to the golden threads of Kevin’s sherwani. Each photograph celebrates their South Asian heritage, while highlighting the vast, serene beauty of the California desert.

Why the California Desert is Perfect for Elopements and Engagements
Whether you’re planning an intimate elopement or a destination engagement session, the California desert offers endless creative possibilities. From sunrise portraits over the dunes to golden-hour moments at sunset, every frame tells a story of connection, authenticity, and love without limits.
For Indian and South Asian couples, a California desert elopement is a chance to redefine tradition — blending cultural elegance with natural minimalism. The open landscape allows couples to focus on each other, creating moments that are both heartfelt and cinematic.

As the sun dipped below the beige horizon, moonlight emerged to cast blue shadows across the landscape. The desert is a magical place.

Planning and Executing a Perfect Desert Shoot
A shoot like this doesn’t happen by chance — it takes careful planning, scouting, and expertise. At Strokes Photography, we dedicate months to pre-planning every detail of a desert session. Jonita, our Creative Director & Lead Photographer, arrived days in advance to scout the vast Glamis Dunes, identifying the best spots where the natural light hits perfectly during both sunrise and sunset.
By carefully mapping out locations, timing, and angles, we ensured every photo captured Amy and Kevin in the most flattering light and stunning compositions. From accessibility and timing to creative decisions about poses and outfit placement, we manage all the details so couples can focus on enjoying their experience.
